Frog Prince

Frog Prince by Charles Robinson

Frog Prince is also known as Frog King. It's the first fairy tale in the Children and Household Tales by Jakob and Wilhelm Grimm, officially noted as KHM 1. It's a very important story, a classic tale about a given word and a broken promise, paternal authority, an undesirable groom in the form of the frog, and, of course, a marriage as a typical happily ever after ending.

Charles Robinson made the illustration which were published in 1911 by Blackie and Son in London. The book was titled The Big Book of Fairy Tales and this blog features several fairy tales from the same collection.

Once upon a time, there was a princess whose favorite pastime was playing with her golden ball. Unfortunately, one day it dropped it in the pond. The princess was sad. She would like to get her ball back. But how?

Then a frog appeared. He asked her what was wrong. Can he help her? She explained her problem and promised to reward the frog. He could eat by her table, play in her room, and sleep in her bed. The frog dived into the pond and after a while returned with the ball.

The princes took the ball and ran home. She had completely forgotten about her promises.

Well, the frog didn't. A promise is a promise. It has to be kept.

The little frog went for a long walk to the castle. When he came, the door was closed. The frog knocked.

The princess ignored the knocking. Her father didn't. He made her to open the door. When the king heard about the given word, he demanded that his daughter fulfill her promises.

The frog could eat at her table. After the dinner, the frog could go to her bedroom.

The princess didn't like it but obliged her father.

When the frog wanted to sleep in her bedroom, she had enough.

She grabbed the little amphibian and threw it at the wall.

At that moment, the frog changed into a handsome prince. He was enchanted and could regain his true look only after finding a proper partner. The princess looked to be the one.

She, of course, liked her new companion much better than before.

The king was satisfied as well.

Without further ado, the princess was taken to the prince's castle. A whole new life was awaiting for her and him.

The story of the frog prince is way more complex than it feels on the surface. It's loaded with classic fairy theme themes, full of symbolism, and, let's face it, three interesting and strong characters.
