Beauty and the Beast

Beauty and the Beast, as seen by Charles Robinson

Beauty and the Beast is a popular fairy tale written by Madam Le Prince de Beaumont.

The illustrator decided to decorate the beginning of each story with a decorative capital letter.

Let's summarize this classic fairy tale with line drawings by Charles Robinson.

There was a merchant who had three daughters. One, she was called Beauty, was very good, others not so good. When he lost his money, they had to move. One of the daughters adapted easily, others not at all. Then the merchant got a chance to regain his fortune.

He had to travel but promised to bring precious gifts to his daughters. Two were very picky, Beauty, the youngest, didn't want anything. Finally, she asked for a rose.

The merchant's travel didn't go as well as expected. On the way back he had to sleep over in a strange castle. It was comfy, it had food, but he saw nobody.

When he left it, he remembered the wish of his youngest daughter and picked a rose in the castle's garden. Then the Beast appeared.

The Beast demanded his death but the merchant asked for a few days delay to take part from the family.

When he returned home, his youngest daughter offered to go to the castle instead of him. The rose was her idea, after all.

The merchant brought Beauty to the Beast. The master of the castle was satisfied. He even gave him a chest full of money.

Beauty spent all the time alone. She had everything she wanted except company.

Then she finally met the Beast. She was scared at first. After a while, she adapted to his appearance. Otherwise, he was very nice to her.

After a while, she asked him if she could visit her family. He agreed if she returned in a week. If not, he will die.

When Beauty's sisters heard how luxurious was her life, they were very jealous. They tried to stop her from returning to the castle.

Beauty had a visitor in her sleep.

She was told that the Beast was dying.

Beauty returned hastily. She came just in time.

The Beast did not just survive. He also transformed into a handsome prince. Her affection saved him from a curse so he could regain human look.

He proposed to her, and she said yes. From now on, Beauty and the Beast lived happily ever after.

Her jealous sisters, on the other hand, turned into stone sculptures.
